John Gaito: Engineers Week Profile

How do you see technology and innovation impacting the future of engineering and society as a whole?

Technology and innovation will continue to play an important role in the engineering and construction industry. We’ve seen over the last decade how advances in building information and modeling contribute to project success through the design and construction phases. IPS works with clients that design and manufacture life-changing products that significantly impact society. The engineering and design effort connected with these life science advances will continue to rely on new technology and innovation within the industry. With society more reliant upon technology, the demand for engineering will continue to increase.

Can you share an example of a project or idea you have been working on that you believe will shape the future in a positive way?

IPS is working with a client that contracts with a company focused on improving the treatment of type 1 diabetes. Scientists are investigating cell therapies that address the root cause of the disease. IPS is coordinating with its team to design and construct all the necessary infrastructure to develop its technologies and product. The effort we make as a project team will have life-changing results for the population struggling with type 1 diabetes.

How do you stay current on emerging technologies and trends in the field of engineering to ensure you are creating solutions for the future?

Engineering is a field that is constantly changing. We are fortunate because it is also a tight-knit community that always shares emerging technologies and trends. There are many organizations an engineer can be involved in learning more about sustainability, new building materials, virtual construction, etc. As an HVAC engineer working in the pharmaceutical industry, I work to keep up to date with topics from ASHRAE and ISPE. In addition, learning hands-on in the field and listening to feedback from our clients and their end users is invaluable. It is important to be proactive in looking for ways to improve a process.

What aspects of your work as an engineer do you find most rewarding and why?

I find work most rewarding when I am challenged to find the best solution for clients that meets all their needs. Whether the client is focusing on schedule, deliverables, or depth design, I want us to be the company that provides that perfect solution. Ultimately, I enjoy being a problem solver.
