What’s the most unusual building material you’ve ever used?
The most unique building material I’ve ever used has been recycled denim as wall insulation, and it was for a LEED Silver project featured in Architectural Digest.
What’s the best part of your job?
I always say nothing would exist in this world without people that build, and I am proud to work with people whom I see as the backbone of America.
If you could build anything in the world, what would it be?
My dream is to design and build my own ranch in the mid-west, live off the land, and rescue senior animals in my retirement years.
What do you believe is the biggest misconception about working in construction?
The biggest misconception about working in the construction industry is that women are treated differently in a male-dominated industry. While women in the US workforce earn an average of 81.1% of what their male counterparts make, the gender pay gap in the construction industry is almost nonexistent, with women earning an average of 99.1% of what men earn. These statistics make me question why wouldn’t every woman want to work in the construction industry.
What’s your favorite piece of construction equipment?
I love my miter saw and nail gun. Both have come in handy for all my DIY projects around the house. My next project is to build an outdoor stand/cabinet for my pizza oven.
What are some ways to be an ally or advocate for women in construction?
The best advice that I can give is don’t be afraid to ask questions. Procure respectable mentors in every aspect of what you do, both men and women. The construction industry has so many resources; reach out to co-workers, subcontractors, and engineers and let them know you want to learn from them. Don’t act like you know everything – people love to teach people things and feel valued. Pay close attention and take notes! You will always be recognized for hard work and dedication.
Who are some leading women in construction that you hold in high regard?
I applaud all women who have chosen to work in the construction industry. They are the ones proactively changing history.
